Words can’t express the amount of loss and grief this year. 💔Two weeks ago, I never would’ve imagined coming back to Kansas to help my beloved grandpa pass unexpectedly from an aggressive and rapid brain tumor. It was an honor to be Al Leiker’s granddaughter and have such a stellar example of authenticity and dedication. He built so many beautiful things with his bare hands, including his house and planted every tree on his property. He passed on his birthday this week, surrounded by family on his farm. His wit, independence, charm, love, dancing, cooking, encouragement, passion for music, life and brilliant spirit is missed in this realm. Whether coaching me in baseball, introducing me to Janis Joplin’s music or supporting my dreams as an adult, he was a pillar. I have dreaded the day of him leaving this planet since I was a child…knowing deep grief is the flip side of the coin to deep love. Thank you for your service, your love, the fun, the magic and for everything you taught me, Papa. You’re forever loved. #rip #love #family ♥️

Mary Martin passed away peacefully on Independence Day. As the fireworks in downtown Nashville began to soar, so did her spirit. It was an honor to be with her just hours before.

Our journey began more than eight years ago, when I was a local TV news reporter. Our mutual dear pals, Verna Wyatt and Valerie Craig, at the nonprofit, @tennessee_voices_for_victims introduced us. We instantly connected as if we had met before and unexpectedly became like sisters later on.

She influenced the life and music of iconic artists, including: @emmylou_harris_ , @rodneyjcrowell @vincegillofficial Chip Taylor @steveearle @bobdylan @the_band_official_ @vanmorrisonofficial @keithurban @leonardcohen and many others. What a humbling experience to be in the orbit of such an incredible spirit and all the company she kept.

Like she did for so many others, she guided me through the ups, downs and evolutions of life. When she knew I wanted to leave news and pursue filmmaking, she asked who I wanted to do a documentary on and I replied, “You”. Mary, being a humble soul, eventually agreed.

Although there have been twists and turns in both of our lives over the years, the film is in post production and will celebrate Mary and her unique story.

During our time together, Mary also encouraged me to pursue my first love of music. She showed her support through listening, giving her honest feedback and even attending shows. There were so many beautiful, magical and bittersweet moments with Mary Martin. I’m grateful for all of them and the wisdom from her. The greatest lessons learned: Blaze your own trail. Do what you love and do all with love.

Mary led an inspiring, independent and authentic life. She will be forever loved and missed. Later in life, Mary always shared this mantra with her tribe: “Peace, calm, beauty, balance, gratitude and loving kindness.” Let it be.
